Muting Notifications

Website monitoring notifications may be unwanted for several reasons:

  • Page content is expected to change frequently, e.g. a newspaper homepage
  • Changing third-party ads that aren't under your control
  • Exclude certain pages that you don't want alerts for

You can mute content in lab alerts or bundle size notifications.

Opening the notification settings​

  1. Go to your project dashboard
  2. Select the Integrations tab
  3. Click the gear icon next to the notification trigger

Mute third-party changes​

This is enabled by default and means you won't get alerts if a change is caused by a third-party script, such as ads, chat widgets, or analytics.

Third-parties are detected based on the domains in this list. Not all of them are muted, for example CDN content is likely to be under the website's control and should therefore trigger a notification.

You'll still get an alert if a new third-party is added and it impacts your page speed metrics.

Mute phrases​

Muting phrases allows you to mute notifications related to specific domains, URLs, console messages, or Lighthouse audits. Alerts will also be muted if the page title contains a muted word.

Phrases are matched as plain text, anywhere in the text being checked, ignoring upper and lower case. Wildcards aren't supported, so googletagmanager.com matches https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js.

What a muted phrase does​

This depends on the type of notification.

JavaScript size change notifications are filtered line by line. Only the matching requests are removed, and the rest of the notification is still sent. If every change in a notification is muted then no message is sent at all.

For example, if you mute googletagmanager.com and a notification contains both a gtag/js change and a change to your own app.js, you'll still be told about app.js.

Lab alerts subtract the muted requests before checking your alert thresholds. If a page's JavaScript grew by 400 KB and 380 KB of that came from muted requests, the remaining 20 KB may be under your threshold, in which case no alert is sent for that metric. Other metrics on the same page are unaffected and still alert as normal.

Other alerts, such as console messages and Lighthouse audits, are muted individually when their text matches.

What the phrase is matched against​

For JavaScript size change notifications, phrases are matched against the request URL.

For lab alerts, phrases are matched against the alert text, the metric, and the page name. Avoid short or generic phrases here, as a phrase that happens to appear in one of your page names will mute that page's alerts.

Muted phrases and new third parties​

The Mute third-party changes toggle still alerts you when a third party is added to a page for the first time. Muted phrases you add yourself have no such exception, so a new request will be muted too if its URL matches.
